Make a Basic Intarsia Sea Shell, Scroll Saw Video Series

One of the things I love about the scroll saw is it's versatility, other than building furniture, there are not many wood working projects that a scroll saw can't take on. Better yet there are many different styles of wood working that can only be performed with the scroll saw, such as cutting out detailed pictures, fret work portraits of people, nameplates and house hold items from candle holders to lamps.

My favorite use of the scroll saw is for the art form called Intarsia, basically, painting with wood. Intarsia can look very intimidating to many new scrollers, and experienced ones as well. I decided to take some of the mystery out of making Intarsia and I developed a 7 part series on how to make a simple Intarsia sea shell. I wanted to show the scrollers that might be intimidated to try Intarsia, just how easy it really is. I also wanted to try to expel the myth that you need several different types of sanding equipment to make Intarsia.

I actually started this video series over a year ago, but it was pushed to the back shelf. I recently decided to clean that shelf off and finish it up. Below is the full playlist of the entire series in the series, I go over the following: Pattern preparation, choosing wood, tracing your pieces from the pattern, cutting your pieces, repairing gaps, sanding and shaping, assembly, making the backer board and finishing. I have also provided the pattern to make your own shell. Please feel free to re-size it however you would like. With intarsia, the bigger the pieces the easier it is to make. If you need help re-sizing the pattern please watch this video:
